This 4-week FGASA Bird Guide course is aimed at you the existing guide who is aspiring to achieve exceptional knowledge and understanding of birds. We aim to unfold the fascinating life of birds by discovering a whole new world that opens up to birds as a result of flight, the power of song, and the diverse adaptations which made birds so successful.
Subjects and outcomes included in this Birding Specialist section of the course include:
- Evolution of Birds
• Bird Anatomy and Physiology
• Zoo-geography
• Adaptations to the environment and Bird Identification
• Classification of Birds
• Feeding and Breeding Behavior and adaptations
• Nesting Behavior, Nest types, and materials
• Chick development and care for young
• Bird Conservation
• Migration and navigation
• Bird names explained
Most of the days on the course will start with the dawn chorus somewhere in the middle of nature. You might find yourself on Ulovane’s beautiful walking trail through pristine thickets vegetation or on the Land Rover exploring Amakhala Game Reserve in search of some of the area’s elusive bird species first thing in the morning.

Learners who join the course can choose to specialize in birds occurring in one or more of the following biomes (vegetation types):
- Arid
- Albany thicket
- Savanna
- Forest
- Marine
- Karoo
- Fynbos

Qualification includes:
- Birding Guide Skills Program
- Birding Slide and Sound Assessment
- Bird Guide Assessment
The Assessment of the Birding Specialist qualification will include the following:
- Birding Specialist workbook completion. The workbook will be marked and a minimum of 75% is needed to successfully complete this part of the Assessment.
- Specialist Tasks completion.
- Theoretical Examinations during the course as well as a summative examination at the end of the course. The pass rate for any of the examinations is 75%.
- Sound Identification Assessment for specific biomes chosen by the learner.
- Slideshow Bird Identification Assessment for specific biomes chosen by the learner.
- An open-book Bird Identification Assessment to identify very difficult examples.
The candidate must have a minimum of a Field Guide Skills Program to qualify for the course. However, you can join us just for birding fun too! Options are available.
